Lighting & Installation Designer, Illusion Designer and Theatre Maker
Dylan Howells
Dylan Howells is a designer, theatre maker and creative technologist specialising in large-scale illuminated trails, installations and interactive light. He has designed illuminated trails and installations for clients including the National Trust and Blenheim Palace, and worked on The Snow Queen trail at Wentworth Woodhouse. Dylan trained in Theatre and Performance Design at LIPA, where he was a Linbury Prize for Stage Design finalist and received the Royal Opera House Linbury Bursary. He is co-founder of Despite the Monkey, a creative company working in immersive events and the attractions sector.
Alongside his design work, Dylan builds the systems that make installations respond and come alive. He develops custom control hardware and software, including wireless OSC-driven controllers, DMX and pixel-mapped LED systems, and bespoke bridges linking lighting consoles, show control and media servers. He also writes custom visual effects for projection and LED work, and pre-visualises designs before they reach site.
As an illusion designer, Dylan creates stage effects and magic for theatre and live performance, bringing the same blend of craft and technology to moments of wonder on stage. As a theatre maker, he is a key collaborator and performer with Fringe First-winning Worklight Theatre, co-writing and performing in It's the Economy, Stupid!, which sold out at the Edinburgh Fringe before transferring to Soho Theatre.
